Rebellion’s Atomfall may not be the biggest game of 2025, but the unique first-person mystery-shooter was a big success for the Sniper Elite studio. With millions of players on launch day, the game has solidified itself as a new brand for the British games studio.
In an episode of the VideoGamer Podcast, releasing later today, creative director Ben Fisher explained that the game’s success does mean that a sequel is on the cards if Rebellion wants to go in that direction. While not confirmed, the team has made sure that the first game has enough mystery left outside its dense countryside for a satisfying follow-up.
What’s the deal with Atomfall 2?
Speaking on the podcast, Fisher explained that Atomfalll has “been sufficiently successful that it definitely qualifies as a brand for us”.
“We always want to balance trying something new with making sequels that people want to play,” Fisher said. “You know, we put out content for Atomfall and people say Zombie [Army] 5 or Sniper [Elite] 6, or whatever. And then you put out content for anything and people will comment about the other game.”
“It’s a high-class problem to have, though, right?” he continued. “It’s good to have several different types of games that people want to play more of. The difficult bit is, when you’re making something new like Atomfall is figuring out what it is… there was an earlier version that didn’t have the leads system, it was more of a guided experience, and the personality of what it is evolved over time.”
Fisher explained that Rebellion now knows “what an Atomfall is”, meaning the path to a sequel is quite clear. “We can take what we’ve learned, double down on what works, improve or iterate those areas.”
The current Atomfall game’s charm is largely due to its setting. Wyndom and the associated countryside are wholly unique compared to the vast majority of other games, but a sequel might take place somewhere else. While Fisher didn’t say where, the team has ideas for what’s happened in other places across the UK and even in the rest of the world.
“We set up our plot threads so we know where they can go,” the developer said. “What we wanted to do was make sure we had options for other stories to tell in this world. And at the same time, we don’t want to let that impend the enjoyment of Atomfall 1. Все of the ex-fills in the game have different consequences and we don’t want to choose the official story so that has an influence on how directly we can tell a sequel. Just like Elder Scrolls, right? We had the Деформация на Западе«.
Fisher explained that the team tried hard to make sure that there are signs within Atomfall of the world outside the dense game world players have already experience. There are plans for the outside, but Fisher won’t reveal anything yet.
“We very intentionally made sure that there are suggestions of a world outside the quarantine zone with no specific details confirmed,” he continued. “We know what influence the Windscale Disaster has on the broader world of Atomfall, we’ve not touched it yet, and it happened five years ago so there’s plenty of time for ripple effects. Any more would be spoilers for a game that doesn’t exist yet.”
